Sociology stands as the most dynamic and versatile of the social sciences, offering a powerful lens to understand the complexities of human society. It trains students to analyse social structures, trace patterns of change, interpret human interactions, and situate individual and collective experiences within their historical, cultural, and social contexts.
The four-year Honours program provides students with a strong foundation in sociological knowledge and research skills, empowering them to think critically and engage with social issues effectively. It fosters confidence, intellectual independence, and analytical depth, preparing students to excel in their chosen fields. With a focus on holistic development, the program nurtures socially aware and sensitive individuals who can contribute meaningfully to society.
The Sociology Department is a vibrant, student-focused space dedicated to the holistic growth of its students. It actively fosters student-led initiatives, including the annual department fest Conscience Collective, the department magazine We Witness, and the Wall Magazine highlighting contemporary social issues—all conceptualized and organized by students under faculty mentorship. In addition to these engaging activities, the department enhances academic and professional development through its Annual seminar, Career counselling sessions, Guest lectures, Alumni-driven sessions and Extension programmes providing students with valuable insights and meaningful exposure each year.
The teaching of Sociology began in 1974 as an elective subject in the B. A. (Pass) Programme. The Department of Sociology was established in 1987, with the introduction of the B.A. (Honours) Sociology Programme.
The Department offers a four-year, eight-semester Undergraduate Course as following:
1. B. A. (Honours) Sociology

The Department offers Discipline-Specific Courses to students of Sociology (Hons.) as well as B.A.Prog. The Department also offers Discipline-Specific Electives, Generic Elective courses, Skill Enhancement Courses and Value-added courses to all the students.
