Circa 1989. The collective vision of stalwarts like the eminent biochemist Prof. B.K. Bachhawat (Department of Biochemistry, UDSC) and Dr. V. Krishnamurthy (ex-Principal, Sri Venkateswara College) led to the genesis of the Department of Biochemistry at SVC. Starting off as an offshoot of the department of Chemistry, this department has blossomed into an entity known for quality teaching. The flagship course offered by the department is B.Sc.(H) Biochemistry and the course offers a wide range of core and elective papers that empower the students with relevant knowledge. With a plethora of core papers ranging from Biomolecules, Proteins, Enzymes and Metabolism to Hormone Biochemistry, Human Physiology, Immunology, Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering to mention a few, students gain a wide as well as an in-depth exposure to all aspects of Biochemistry. To add further flavour to the experience of becoming young Biochemists, the department offers engaging Discipline Specific Elective papers, Skill Enhancement papers and General Elective papers. These include Biochemical Applications in Forensic Sciences, Nutritional Biochemistry and Pharmacology and Toxicology. The department also has the unique distinction of offering a one-year P.G. Diploma in Molecular and Biochemical Technology since 1990, that aims to train manpower for life-sciences based research labs in both industry and academia. The Biochemistry department also participates in cooperative teaching of the students of another undergraduate multi-disciplinary course namely B.Sc.(H) Biological Sciences.
Research projects run by the faculty members, like the TB Molecular Biology and Signaling Lab, Cancer Research Lab and the Bioinformatics Centre help to further strengthen the analytical skills of the students through constant scientific discussions and debate. In-house internship projects under the banner of SRI-VIPRA (an effort to encourage students to engage in research work during the summer months) led by the faculty members and interested students, are another source of hands-on learning. Value-added experiments that are conducted in regular practical classes ensure that no student is bereft of the excitement of learning beyond the curriculum. The department organizes an academic festival entitled ‘CATALYSIS’ each year, wherein the students select an area of interest and then go on to collect articles, crosswords and puzzles which comes together in the form of a magazine, aptly called ‘Expressions’. AMALGAM, an inter-college mixed bag competition is the signature event of our department. Several students of the department have also made a mark in extracurricular activities like music, dance and sports.
The department comprises experienced faculty from diverse disciplines and with national and international achievements such as INSA Teacher Awards, research grants and travel grants. Well-equipped labs with highly trained lab staff together accomplish academic ambience for inclusive growth of the students. The student progression of the department bears testimony to the pedagogy adopted by the professors of the department, being second to none in Delhi University. The alumni of the department are widely dispersed in various parts of the globe, having made their way to into top-tier institutes and universities as researchers, faculty members, while some have become entrepreneurs, and others hold enviable positions in the corporate world.
